Preservative

Falso cognato na área! E este é no mínimo engraçado pois pode levar o falante a situações um tanto quanto constrangedoras. 

A palavra preservative lembra muito o termo formal dado à camisinha em português. No entanto, usa-se preservatives não exatamente para evitar gravidez ou doenças sexualmente transmissíveis. Preservatives são colocados em alimentos. "Que nojo!", um desavisado pensaria. No entanto, preservatives fazem que alimentos durem mais tempo. Recebem o nome de conservantes na língua de Camões. 

E aquela outra coisa? Ahhh, aquela outra coisa?! Bem, nos momentos mais legais da vida, é importantíssimo que tenhamos uma condom na carteira, bolsa, carro, cozinha, garagem... hehehe

Presente de Natal

Neste final de ano, o MAB sorteará um semestre de inglês totalmente livre de mensalidade. O sorteio será no dia 3 de dezembro, às 10h20min da manhã.

Na estréia de "A Blog Interview", nada melhor que logo o coordenador do curso Mr. Fuentes. A conversa se deu em clima informal para que o nosso entrevistado se sentisse super tranquilo e pudesse responder com franqueza as questões a ele levadas.

How did you decide to become an English teacher?

-          Well, first of all I’ve always studied English so I’ve always felt it was like part of my soul, of my body... And during the “vet times” I’ve decided to work to get an extra and… Then I’ve found myself in front of the board... The white board and I just loved it. So I’ve quit vet and then studied languages. And here I am… 14 years later here I am, indeed.

How long have you been working at Mab?

-          14 years.

What makes you glad during a class and what upsets you the most?

-          When students are into it, when they are really working and participating and feeling like we’re just one single group… one single individual. Sometimes I like to think that.

-          What upsets me the most… Well… The opposite. When I’m talking to the wall. But sometimes the wall is fun! (laughs)

What is the most unusual situation you’ve ever been through while teaching a class?

-          I can’t really say it because that was really awkward. But if you’ve ever been my student, you know what I’m talking about. But I could say it was some kind of Michael Douglas basic instinct thing.

What is the first thing you do as soon as you get home after work?

-          Well, I take my clothes off, have a shower and obviously smoke my pipe. 

Do you fear anything? What?

-          Honestly I don’t fear anything. Maybe being robbed, but I’m not afraid of dying. I’d love to die some day. It’s Paul McCartney, babe – “live and let die”.

What are your plans for the future?

-          I intend to keep working and have fun like I’ve always had.

第二届中华文化知识竞赛决赛

SEGUNDA COMPETIÇÃO DE JOVENS CHINESES NASCIDOS  FORA DA CHINA

Entre os dias 20 de outubro e 3 de novembro, o professor de mandarim do MAB estará participando da segunda competição internacional de jovens de origem chinesa  na cidade de Xi'an.
O evento leva até a China jovens de várias partes do mundo para duelarem em provas de história, geografia e cultura do país oriental.

Toda a nossa torcida para o Daniel representando a família MAB no outro lado do globo.

Spoiler

Algumas palavras do inglês acabam se tornando muito populares pelo seu uso massivo em redes sociais. Spoiler é sem dúvidas uma delas.

As pessoas chamam de spoiler qualquer comentário ou texto que conta o final de uma trama. Vale aí filme, seriados e até novelas.

Poucas sabem, no entanto, o significado original do termo. Spoiler vem do verbo "spoil" (estragar), sendo então traduzido como "aquilo ou aquele que estraga". Podemos dizer que um produto está spoiled caso não esteja mais apto para o consumo.

Além disso, uma "spoiled child" nada mais é do que aquele verminho chato que os pais "estragaram" na criação, oferecendo-lhe todos os presentes e nunca negando suas vontades.

A Biblioteca do MAB possui um acervo diverso de livros em língua estrangeira para que nossos alunos possam gratuitamente praticar o que aprendem nas aulas de forma divertida. Estas são algumas de nossas novas aquisições:

At 32 years old, Elizabeth Gilbert was educated, had a home, a husband, and a successful career as a writer. However, she was unhappy in her marriage and often spent the night sleeping on her bathroom floor. After separating from her husband and initiating a divorce, which he contested, she embarked on a rebound relationship which continued for some time but did not work out, leaving her devastated and alone.

Afterwards, while writing an article on yoga vacations in Bali, Gilbert met a ninth-generation medicine man who told her she would one day come back and study with him. After finalizing her difficult divorce, Gilbert spent the next year traveling around the world. The trip was paid for in advance with a book deal from the publisher.

She spent four months in Italy, eating and enjoying life ("Eat"). She spent three months in India, finding her spirituality ("Pray"). She ended the year in Bali, Indonesia, looking for "balance" of the two and found love ("Love") in the form of a dashing Brazilian factory owner.

Isabella "Bella" Swan moves from sunny Phoenix, Arizona to rainy Forks, Washington to live with her father, Charlie, while her mother, Renée, travels with her new husband, Phil Dwyer, a minor league baseball player. Bella attracts much attention at her new school and is quickly befriended by several students. Much to her dismay, several boys compete for shy Bella's attention.

When Bella is seated next to Edward Cullen in class on her first day of school, Edward seems utterly repulsed by her. He disappears for a few days, but warms up to Bella upon his return; their newfound relationship reaches a climax when Bella is nearly run over by a fellow classmate's van in the school parking lot. Edward saves her life when he instantaneously appears next to her and stops the van with his bare hands.

Bella becomes determined to find out how Edward saved her life, and constantly pesters him with questions. After a family friend, Jacob Black, tells her the local tribal legends, Bella concludes that Edward and his family are vampires who drink animal blood rather than human. Edward confesses that he initially avoided Bella because the scent of her blood was too desirable to him. Over time, Edward and Bella fall in love.

Their relationship is disturbed when another vampire coven arrives in Forks. James, a tracker vampire who is intrigued by the Cullens' relationship with a human, wants to hunt Bella for sport. The Cullens attempt to distract the tracker by splitting up Bella and Edward, and Bella is sent to hide in a hotel in Phoenix. There, Bella receives a phone call from James, who claims to be holding her mother captive. When Bella surrenders herself, James attacks her. Before James can kill her, Edward, along with the other Cullens, rescues her and defeats James. Once they realize that James has bitten Bella's hand, Edward successfully sucks the poison from her bloodstream and prevents her from becoming a vampire, after which she is brought to a hospital. Upon returning to Forks, Bella and Edward attend their school prom and Bella expresses her desire to become a vampire, but Edward refuses.
